Frequently Asked Questions About Dining Tables
What length dining table do I need for 4, 6, or 8 people?
As a guide, allow 60 cm of table edge per person. A 1.4-1.6 m table seats 4, 1.8-2.0 m seats 6, 2.2-2.4 m seats 8, and 2.6-3.0 m seats 10. Round tables of 1.2 m seat 4, 1.5 m seats 6 comfortably.
Extendable or fixed-length dining table - which is better?
Extendable tables make sense if you regularly seat 4 but host larger groups a few times a year - you keep the room open day-to-day and extend when you need it. Fixed tables look more solid, have no mechanism to wear out, and are easier to live with if you host the same size group most weeks.
Round or rectangular dining table for a small dining room?
Round tables fit awkward or narrow rooms better - no protruding corners, and people can squeeze in around the edge. Rectangular tables make better use of long, narrow rooms and seat more people per square metre. For square rooms under 3 x 3 m, round is almost always the more comfortable choice.
How do I care for a marble dining table?
Wipe spills straight away with a soft damp cloth, then dry with a clean one - red wine, citrus, vinegar, tomato sauce and coffee can leave marks if they sit on the surface. For everyday cleaning, warm water with a little mild dish soap is enough; skip anything acidic (vinegar, lemon sprays) or harsh (bleach, scouring pads). Use coasters under cups and a placemat or wooden board under hot dishes - putting a hot pan straight onto cold marble can mark or crack it.
Will small natural cracks or grain variation in a wooden table top be a defect?
No. Solid timber tops show natural grain, knots and small surface movement as humidity changes through the year - this is a feature of real wood, not a fault. If you notice anything that looks like a fault rather than natural movement, contact us with photos and we will advise.
